DismantlE Racism Salt Spring

An ongoing art mural started in June 2020 commissioned by Al's Gourmet Falafel and Fries created by artist Katira Niquidet.
We acknowledge that we are living and working on the unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, which is the traditional land of multiple First Nations including the Cowichan, Tsawassen, Tsawout, Tsartlip,Pauquachin, Penelakut, WSANEC, Malahat and Tseycum.
We acknowledge that there is still and always has been systemic racism in Canada. This mural is created in support of our fellow Salt Spring Island Black, Indigenous and People Of Colour (BIPOC); our friends, our family, our community.
We believe in standing up against racial discrimination and supporting those who have been hurt by this system of  inequality.
#DISMANTLERACISM
Our diversity is our strength.

Al's Ancestor Story

Al's ancestors have travelled westward for many generations looking  to escape persecution and for a better life - from Eastern Europe to England and Ireland, then to Montreal where he was born. He left Montreal at 18 for Atlantic Canada knowing that he would eventually move West. Al first visited Salt Spring Island in 1996 but didn't stay. He went on to live and travel in Israel, England, Ireland and Toronto before returning to Salt Spring in 2001 to lay down roots. Al holds a deep appreciation and respect for First Nations history and the diverse settler culture and history of the Island.
